About Plaza Park in Oxnard
Plaza Park, located in downtown Oxnard, California, serves as the vibrant heart of the city and a focal point for community gatherings. This historic 2-acre park is situated at the intersection of Fifth and C Streets, providing a green oasis amidst the urban landscape.
At the center of Plaza Park stands its most iconic feature: an octagonal pagoda. Built in 1910, this structure originally housed a pump for irrigating the park and was later modified in 1911 to serve as a bandstand. The pagoda has since become a symbol of the park and continues to be a gathering spot for concerts and patriotic celebrations. It is one of the last remaining band pavilions in California and was designated a County historic landmark in 1971.
The park's layout features four centered paths leading into the park from each bordering street, all intersecting at the central pagoda. Visitors can enjoy strolls along these paths, which are lined with metal benches and shaded by large, mature trees. The expansive green lawns provide ample space for picnics, relaxation, and community events.
Throughout the year, Plaza Park hosts a variety of festivals and activities that bring the community together. These include the Oxnard Salsa Festival, Multicultural Festival, and the Santa to the Sea race. The park also participates in First Thursday Food truck nights, attracting locals and visitors to enjoy culinary delights and shop with local vendors.
One of Plaza Park's most notable seasonal attractions is its towering Christmas tree, which stands over 110 feet tall when decorated for the holidays. This majestic tree, considered the tallest Christmas tree in Ventura County, becomes a beacon of holiday cheer and a popular destination during the festive season.
Surrounded by restaurants, shops, and the Plaza Stadium Cinemas, Plaza Park serves not only as a recreational space but also as a central hub connecting various aspects of downtown Oxnard's cultural and commercial life. Its proximity to these amenities makes it an ideal spot for visitors to relax before or after enjoying the nearby attractions.
