About Sutter's Landing Regional Park in Sacramento

Sutter's Landing Regional Park is a 204.28-acre outdoor space located along the American River in Sacramento, California, approximately one mile northeast of downtown and less than three miles from the State Capitol. The park serves as a gateway to the 31.5-mile American River Parkway, which attracts over 8 million visitors annually.

The park's history is tied to Captain John A. Sutter, who landed near this location in August 1839 and established the first non-Indian settlement within the present city limits of Sacramento. In more recent times, the site was used as the 28th Street Landfill, which eventually became the city's primary dump. In 1984, the city designated the area for development as a regional park, and it was officially named Sutter's Landing Park in 1989.

Today, Sutter's Landing Regional Park offers a blend of urban amenities and access to natural beauty. The park features walking and biking trails that connect to the American River Parkway, providing opportunities for outdoor recreation and wildlife viewing. Efforts have been made to restore natural habitats along the river, supporting local wildlife including Swainson's hawks, white-tailed kites, and northern harriers.

The park continues to evolve, with ongoing plans for expansion and improvement. Recent developments include the acquisition of additional property and updates to the park's amenities plan. The City of Sacramento regularly seeks community input to ensure the park's development aligns with local needs and preferences.
