About Ronald Reagan Park in San Bernardino
Ronald Reagan Park is a small neighborhood park located in San Bernardino, California. The park's most notable feature is a piece of the Berlin Wall, which was installed in 2011 to commemorate Ronald Reagan's role in ending the Cold War. This 12.5-foot high slab of concrete stands as a historical artifact and educational tool in an otherwise modest park setting.
The park, which opened in 2007, was named after former President Ronald Reagan, who had passed away a few years earlier. A local group called Friends of Ronald Reagan Park raised funds to purchase and transport the section of the Berlin Wall, paying about $2,500 for the wall segment and an additional $3,800 for shipping.
While the city initially had ambitious plans for the park, including adding a statue of Reagan and creating a paved walkway with information about the former president, these plans were not realized due to San Bernardino's bankruptcy in 2012. As a result, the park remains a simple green space with the Berlin Wall segment as its primary point of interest.
The park has faced some challenges over the years, including issues with the preservation of the wall segment. Local residents have reported concerns about pieces of the wall falling off or being taken by visitors. Despite these challenges, the park continues to serve as a unique historical site within the San Bernardino community.
