Pioneer Park

Pioneer Park, also known as Mission Hills Park, is a public space located in the Mission Hills neighborhood of San Diego, California. The park has a unique and somewhat controversial history, as it was originally established in 1876 as Calvary Cemetery, a Catholic burial ground. In 1968, the cemetery was converted into a public park, though the bodies of those interred were not removed.

The park spans approximately 13 acres and serves as a popular recreational area for local residents and visitors. It features a large grassy area suitable for picnics and leisure activities, as well as a children's playground. Tennis courts are located across the street from the main park area, providing additional recreational opportunities.

One of the most notable features of Pioneer Park is the row of preserved headstones situated in a corner of the park. These serve as a memorial to the site's history as a cemetery and commemorate those still buried beneath the grounds. A plaque listing the names of over 1,800 individuals interred within the park can also be found on site.

The park's transformation from cemetery to public space has made it a point of interest for both history enthusiasts and paranormal investigators. Some visitors report an eerie atmosphere, particularly after dark, with claims of spectral sightings and unexplained phenomena.
