Bird Park

Bird Park at Morley Field is a unique public space located in the northeast section of Balboa Park in San Diego, California. The park, which opened in September 1997, was designed by local artists Robin Brailsford and Wick Alexander. Its most distinctive feature is its layout, which resembles a bird when viewed from above. Pershing Drive forms the "branch" on which the bird-shaped park stands.

The park covers approximately six acres and incorporates various avian-themed elements into its design. The sidewalks within the park are stamped with the names of bird species native to San Diego, furthering the bird motif. This creative design not only provides an aesthetically pleasing environment but also serves as an educational tool for visitors interested in local wildlife.

Bird Park has become a popular community gathering spot since its inception. It is particularly well-known for hosting the Bird Park Summer Concerts, a series of free outdoor music events held on select Saturdays during the summer months. These concerts, which began in 2002, have drawn hundreds of people to enjoy picnics, dancing, and live performances by local musicians.

The park's open grassy areas and scenic views make it an ideal location for various recreational activities and relaxation. Its design incorporates native plantings to attract local birds, enhancing the park's connection to nature and providing opportunities for birdwatching. The park also offers excellent views of Fourth of July fireworks displays over San Diego Bay, making it a favored spot for holiday celebrations.

Bird Park is part of the larger Morley Field Sports Complex, named after John Morley, who served as park superintendent in Balboa Park from 1911 to 1939. This connection to the broader park system enhances its accessibility and integration into the community's recreational infrastructure.
