About South Park in San Francisco
South Park is the oldest public park in San Francisco, located in the South of Market (SoMa) neighborhood. Established in 1852, it was originally conceived as a London-style city garden surrounded by upscale residences. The park is approximately 34,000 square feet (0.85 acres) in size and features an oval shape.
Over the years, South Park has undergone several transformations. After its initial period as an exclusive residential area, it experienced decline and later became a hub for various immigrant communities. During the 1990s dot-com boom, South Park became a focal point for tech companies and startups, earning it the nickname "ground zero" of the tech boom.
In 2017, the park underwent a significant renovation led by Fletcher Studio Landscape Architecture. The redesign aimed to modernize the space while paying homage to its historical roots as an English strolling park. The renovation included upgrades to the park's infrastructure, including new paths, irrigation, drainage, and site lighting.
The park now features a variety of spaces catering to different uses. At its center is a large open meadow, surrounded by walkways that follow the oval shape of the park. The landscape includes native plantings and a hummingbird garden, adding to the park's natural appeal. For families and children, there is a custom-designed playground with unique climbing structures and a multi-user, accessible saucer swing.
South Park serves as a popular lunch spot for workers from nearby offices and tech companies. Its tree-lined paths and benches provide a tranquil escape from the busy urban environment. The park is encircled by South Park Street, which is home to various cafes and restaurants, contributing to the area's vibrant atmosphere.
