About West Sunset Playground in San Francisco

West Sunset Playground is a public park located in the Sunset District of San Francisco, California. Established in 1954, the park spans approximately 738,000 square feet and is situated between Sunset Elementary School and A. P. Giannini Middle School, near the intersection of Ortega and Quintara Streets.

The park features a diverse range of recreational facilities catering to various age groups and interests. Its layout includes multiple sports fields, courts, and a dedicated children's play area. The playground equipment was renovated in 2011, providing updated amenities for younger visitors.

One of the notable features of West Sunset Playground is its sports facilities. The park houses multiple baseball diamonds, including one named after Al Erle, the first president of the Old Timers Baseball league, and another called Grant's Field. There is also a soccer field dedicated in 1986, which was later named after James Lucey, a long-time employee of the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department.

The park's design incorporates both active and passive recreation areas. In addition to the sports fields, there are tennis courts and basketball courts available for public use. The children's play area includes modern playground equipment suitable for different age groups.

West Sunset Playground also features a clubhouse structure that is contiguous with the adjacent public library building, providing additional community space. The park includes concrete bleachers that can accommodate up to 1,750 spectators, enhancing its capacity to host sporting events and community gatherings.

Access to the park is marked by a distinctive painted steel gate at the Ortega Street entrance, featuring a cut-out rising sun motif in yellow and gray, which adds a unique visual element to the park's identity.
