About Kirk Park in San Jose
Kirk Park is a community park located in San Jose, California. Spanning 5.2 acres, this neighborhood green space offers a blend of recreational facilities and open areas for visitors to enjoy.
The park features a mix of natural and developed spaces, providing opportunities for various activities. Its perimeter walkway is well-used by park visitors, making it a popular spot for light exercise and leisurely strolls. In recent years, community volunteers have transformed parts of the park's weedy perimeter into a native plant pollinator garden, enhancing the park's biodiversity.
This pollinator garden, which began in 2022, now occupies most of the northern and some of the western edge of the park. It showcases over 120 species of native plants, all labeled for educational purposes. The garden is designed to provide a continuous source of nectar for native pollinators, ensuring that there is almost always something in bloom. This addition has made Kirk Park a local destination for viewing beautiful native plants, birds, lizards, bees, and butterflies, including the struggling monarch butterfly.
The bulk of Kirk Park comprises turf grass areas used for recreational activities. These open spaces allow for informal sports and gatherings, contributing to the park's role as a community hub.
Community involvement is a significant aspect of Kirk Park. Volunteers meet regularly to maintain the pollinator garden, engaging in activities such as weeding, watering, mulching, and planting. This community-driven approach has transformed Kirk Park into more than just a recreational space – it's become an educational resource and a showcase for California's native flora and fauna.
