About Tamien Park in San Jose
Tamien Park is a newly developed public space located in central San Jose, California. Situated on Lick Avenue, the park serves the Tamien neighborhood, which is named after the indigenous Tamien people of the Ohlone nation.
The park's development occurred in two phases. The first phase opened in 2017, encompassing 1.4 acres and featuring amenities such as a playground, picnic areas, and a basketball court. The second phase, completed in June 2021, expanded the park to its full 3.5-acre size.
Tamien Park is designed with both recreational and environmental considerations in mind. A notable feature is its focus on stormwater management, with 90% of the park's surface area being permeable. This design choice helps to minimize environmental impact through low-impact design principles.
The park's location adjacent to the Tamien Caltrain and VTA Light Rail stations makes it easily accessible via public transportation, contributing to its integration with the surrounding urban area. This proximity to transit hubs aligns with San Jose's broader goals for transit-oriented development in the area.
