About Heinlenville Park in San Jose

Heinlenville Park is a newly opened public space located in San Jose's historic Japantown neighborhood. The park, which opened on October 10, 2023, is situated on North Sixth Street between Jackson and East Taylor Streets. It covers an area of 0.75 acres and serves as a green space between two apartment developments.

The park is named after John Heinlen, a German immigrant who played a significant role in San Jose's history. In 1887, Heinlen leased his land to provide a safe haven for Chinese immigrants after the destruction of the Market Street Chinatown. This area, known as Heinlenville, became the last and longest-lasting Chinatown in San Jose before its demolition in 1931.

Heinlenville Park is designed to pay tribute to the rich cultural history of the area. It features several elements that reflect the neighborhood's past and celebrate its diverse heritage. The park includes a history panel with historical images, facts, and dates, as well as medallions on the ground labeled with historic dates. These features provide visitors with insights into the area's significant Chinese and Japanese American history.

A notable feature of the park is the "Sheltering Wing," an 18-foot-high stainless steel sculpture created by artist Roger White Stoller. This artwork was designed in consultation with representatives from the Asian-American community and serves as a landmark within the park.

The park is intended to be a gathering place for the community, providing space for various events and activities. It serves as a testament to the collective efforts of many individuals and groups, including city officials, community leaders, and local residents who worked for years to bring this project to fruition.
