About Borel Park in San Mateo
Borel Park is a 1.15-acre neighborhood park located in San Mateo, California. Situated at the intersection of Barneson and Shafter streets, the park is adjacent to Borel Middle School and serves as a valuable green space for the local community. Developed on a previously underutilized corner lot, Borel Park opened to the public in late August 2022, marking the first new park in San Mateo since the early 2000s.
The park features a woodland-themed design that complements the existing landscape. Mature trees were preserved during development to provide natural shade and established greenery. New plantings have been added to enhance the park's aesthetic appeal and create a seamless integration with the surrounding environment.
Borel Park offers a range of recreational facilities catering to different age groups. Two distinct play areas have been incorporated into the park design, one for children aged 2-5 years and another for those aged 5-12 years. These play areas include large climbing structures, slides, and a merry-go-round, providing ample opportunities for children to engage in physical activity and imaginative play.
The park's layout includes ADA-compliant pathways that wind through the space, ensuring accessibility for all visitors. Along these paths, large Adirondack chairs have been strategically placed, offering comfortable seating areas for relaxation and observation. The park also features two grassy areas suitable for various lawn activities and informal gatherings.
Designed with community needs in mind, Borel Park provides a welcoming environment for residents to enjoy outdoor recreation, socialize, and connect with nature. Its proximity to Borel Middle School makes it a convenient location for students and families, while its thoughtful design ensures that it serves as a valuable asset to the broader San Mateo community.
