About Andy Lopez Unity Park in Santa Rosa
Andy Lopez Unity Park is a 4.4-acre community park located in the Moorland Avenue neighborhood of southwest Santa Rosa, California. The park, which opened in June 2018, was developed following a collaborative design and naming process with local residents.
The park features a memorial area dedicated to Andy Lopez, a 13-year-old neighborhood youth who was fatally shot at the undeveloped site in 2013. This tragic event sparked community outrage and protests, leading to the creation of this park as a space for healing and unity.
Andy Lopez Unity Park combines elements of both a traditional "park" and a "parque," reflecting the cross-cultural nature of the community it serves. The design aims to foster new cross-cultural friendships, mutual respect, and understanding among residents.
Major funding for the park came from the County of Sonoma, the Sonoma County Agricultural Preservation and Open Space District, and the California Department of Housing and Community Development. The park has become a central gathering place for the entire neighborhood, living up to its name by bringing the community together.
