Sloan's Lake Park

Sloan's Lake Park, located on the northwest side of Denver, Colorado, is the city's second-largest park, spanning 290 acres. The centerpiece of the park is Sloan's Lake itself, which covers 177 acres and holds the distinction of being Denver's largest body of water. The park's origins date back to 1861, when homesteader Thomas Sloan inadvertently created the lake while digging a well on his property.

The park offers stunning views of both the Rocky Mountains and the Denver skyline, making it a popular spot for outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers. A 2.6-mile paved trail encircles the lake, providing an ideal route for walking, jogging, and cycling. The expansive grassy areas surrounding the lake are perfect for picnicking and relaxation.

Sloan's Lake Park is home to diverse wildlife, including a variety of bird species such as white pelicans, mallard ducks, Canada geese, and cormorants. The lake's waters support fish populations, including black crappie, carp, and trout, which are stocked by the Colorado Parks and Wildlife agency. Visitors may also spot semi-aquatic mammals like muskrats along the shoreline.

The park hosts several events throughout the year, with the most notable being the annual Colorado Dragon Boat Festival. This two-day summer event celebrates Asian American culture and features dragon boat races on the lake, attracting thousands of visitors.
