About Globeville Landing Park in Denver

Globeville Landing Park is a public park located along the South Platte River in Denver, Colorado. The park underwent a significant redesign and expansion as part of a larger stormwater management project aimed at reducing flood risks in the area.

The park serves as the outfall for the Montclair drainage basin, the largest in Denver. To address previous flooding issues, a 4,500-foot concrete conduit system was installed to carry stormwater during major events. This system culminates in an open, more natural stormwater outfall at Globeville Landing Park, designed to provide wildlife habitat, ecosystem restoration, and improved water quality.

The redesigned park features a mix of active and passive recreational spaces. It includes expansive lawn areas for various activities, multiple bike and pedestrian paths, and outdoor seating areas. The park also offers improved access to the South Platte River, with a plaza created at the river's edge for small gatherings and outdoor enjoyment.

A key feature of the park is its innovative playground design. The playground area includes water and sand play elements, a custom nature play area, and separate play structures for different age groups. A unique rope swing built for three users and a custom climbing wall add to the park's distinctive recreational offerings.

The park's redesign also focused on environmental sustainability. Large areas of bluegrass were converted to native grasses, which will reduce irrigation needs. The stormwater outfall was designed with a stable, impermeable lining beneath the open channel to separate and protect surface water flows from contaminated groundwater.

Globeville Landing Park serves as a gateway to the National Western Center and acts as a community park for the Globeville and surrounding neighborhoods. Its redesign has transformed it from a simple green space into a multifunctional area that combines flood control, environmental protection, and recreational opportunities for Denver residents.
