About Alethia Tanner Park in Washington
Alethia Tanner Park is a 2.5-acre green space located in Washington, D.C., situated just north of New York Avenue NE in the Eckington neighborhood. The park, which opened in June 2020, was developed by the NoMa Parks Foundation as part of an initiative to increase public green spaces in the area.
Named after Alethia Tanner, a prominent African American leader in early 19th century Washington D.C., the park sits on what was formerly a vacant lot and rail yard. Its design incorporates elements that pay homage to the site's industrial past while providing modern amenities for community use.
The park features an expansive green lawn that serves as a central gathering space for various community events, including outdoor movie screenings. Surrounding this open area are more active zones, including an enclosed playground for children and a dedicated dog park. The park also offers pedestrian connections to the Metropolitan Branch Trail, enhancing accessibility for cyclists and pedestrians.
Environmental considerations were integral to the park's development. The site required soil remediation due to its industrial history, which included both traditional methods of soil replacement and innovative phytoremediation techniques. A meadow planted with specific flora aids in the ongoing remediation of soil contaminants while also improving the local ecosystem.
Alethia Tanner Park is designed to be a multifunctional space that caters to various community needs. It provides areas for relaxation, recreation, and community gatherings, making it a valuable addition to the neighborhood's public spaces.
