About Girard Street Park in Washington
Girard Street Park is a small urban park located in the Columbia Heights neighborhood of Washington, D.C. Situated at the corner of 14th and Girard Streets NW, this compact green space serves as a vital community gathering place.
The park underwent a significant redevelopment in 2009 to better meet the needs of the surrounding community. It features a unique poured-in-place rubber surface that incorporates the word "Welcome" in six different languages, reflecting the cultural diversity of the Columbia Heights area. This surface not only adds visual interest but also provides a safe, year-round play area for children.
One of the park's main features is a full-sized basketball court, which is sunken about 5 feet below street level on the eastern side of the property. The western side of the park includes raised cement planters that double as seating areas. A central pathway connects these two distinct sections.
Girard Street Park is designed to be accessible and enjoyable for all ages. It includes play structures for children, as well as amenities that cater to adults and seniors. The park's location adjacent to the Columbia Heights Community Center enhances its role as a neighborhood hub for recreation and social interaction.
Despite its relatively small size, Girard Street Park efficiently utilizes its space to provide a variety of recreational opportunities. Its redesign has made it a popular spot for local residents, nearby schools, and community programs throughout the year.
