About The Yards Park in Washington
The Yards Park is a 5.4-acre waterfront park located along the Anacostia River in Washington, D.C. Situated in the Capitol Riverfront neighborhood, it was completed in 2010 as part of the redevelopment of the former Washington Navy Yard annex area. The park serves as a central gathering space and recreational area for the surrounding community.
The park features a variety of spaces designed for different activities and experiences. At its entrance, visitors encounter the Dancing Fountains, a series of water jets and scrims that provide a playful and cooling environment, especially popular during hot summer days. The fountains are illuminated at night, creating an attractive visual display.
Central to the park is the Canal Basin and Waterwall, which pays homage to the historic canal that once ran from the Anacostia River to the U.S. Capitol Building. This large wading pool allows visitors to cool off and relax by the water. Adjacent to the basin is the iconic sculptural bridge, an architectural highlight that spans the water feature and connects different areas of the park.
The Great Lawn offers a spacious green area for picnics, casual sports, and relaxation. Surrounding the lawn are shaded areas with trees and wooden benches. The park also includes an overlook area with bistro tables and chairs, providing scenic views of the river.
For pet owners, there is a designated dog run where dogs can be off-leash. The park is also part of the larger Anacostia Riverwalk Trail system, with a quarter-mile boardwalk running along its length, offering opportunities for walking, jogging, and cycling.
The Yards Park hosts various events throughout the year, including concerts, festivals, and fitness classes, making it a vibrant community space. Its design has garnered several awards, including recognition from the Urban Land Institute.
