About Secret Woods Park in Fort Lauderdale
Secret Woods Nature Center is a 57-acre urban wilderness area located in Dania Beach, Florida, just outside of Fort Lauderdale. Established in 1978, it was designated as Florida's first "urban wilderness area" to preserve a tract of native Florida habitat within an urban setting.
The nature center features several ecosystems, including a hardwood hammock, maple wetlands, and mangrove swamps along the New River. Visitors can explore these habitats via two main trails: the Laurel Oak Trail, a mulch path that winds through the upland areas, and the New River Trail, an elevated boardwalk that takes visitors through wetland areas and along the river's edge.
A key attraction is the Butterfly Garden, also known as Butterfly Island, which contains over 20 different species of plants that attract native butterflies. The garden provides opportunities to observe various butterfly species in their natural habitat.
The Monarch Interpretive Center, a 2,000-square-foot facility, houses interactive exhibits on local ecology, including displays on plant and animal life, computers with educational programs, and a small theater for nature presentations. Live animal exhibits, including native snakes and other reptiles, are also featured.
Secret Woods Nature Center offers various educational programs and guided nature walks for visitors of all ages. These programs aim to increase awareness and appreciation of South Florida's unique ecosystems and wildlife.
Despite its proximity to urban areas and major highways, the nature center provides a peaceful retreat where visitors can experience Florida's natural beauty and diverse wildlife in a relatively undisturbed setting.
