About Lewis Landing Park in Fort Lauderdale
Lewis Landing Park is a public green space located in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Situated along the South Fork of the New River, the park offers visitors a serene environment to enjoy nature and local history. The park is named after the Lewis Family, who were among the first European settlers in the area, arriving in 1792.
The park features historical significance, as it was once the site of a Tequesta Indian village dating back to 800-1200 AD. Archaeological excavations conducted in 2010 uncovered animal bones, shells, and artifacts including pottery shards, providing insight into the area's ancient inhabitants.
Lewis Landing Park serves as a quiet retreat for local residents and visitors alike. The park's location along the river provides opportunities for fishing and enjoying water views. It also includes open areas for relaxation and picnicking.
In recent years, efforts have been made to enhance the park's educational value. A Girl Scout Gold Award project involved creating informational signs to educate visitors about the park's history and the Tequesta Indian artifacts discovered on site.
