About Depot Park in Gainesville
Depot Park is a 32-acre urban park located in downtown Gainesville, Florida. Opened in 2016, the park was created on the site of a former industrial brownfield that underwent extensive environmental remediation. The area once housed a railroad depot built in the 1860s, which served as a transportation hub until the 1920s.
The park features a large pond with a 20-foot wide promenade along its northern edge, providing visitors with scenic views and walking paths. A conservation area occupies the southern half of the park, consisting of wetlands and upland plantings that create habitat for various wildlife species.
At the heart of Depot Park is a one-acre children's play area, which includes a custom-designed playground and a splash pad called the Blue Grotto. The Blue Grotto, inspired by Florida's underwater caverns, offers water features such as waterfalls, ground jets, and water cannons for visitors to enjoy.
The historic train depot building has been renovated and now houses a convenience store, restaurant, and beer and wine garden. Adjacent to the park is the Cade Museum for Creativity and Invention, which opened in 2018 and adds an educational component to the park experience.
Depot Park serves as a central gathering space for the Gainesville community, hosting various events throughout the year including concerts, food truck rallies, and holiday celebrations. The park also plays a role in the city's stormwater management system, with ponds designed to capture and treat runoff from the surrounding downtown area.
