Florida C. Dwight Memorial Playground is located in the La Villa section near downtown Jacksonville, just west of Interstate 95. The park has historical significance, as it was established in 1929 as the city's second playground for African-American children, originally named La Villa Playground.
The playground holds special importance in Jacksonville's history of recreation. Florida Dwight, for whom the park is now named, served as the playground's first recreation director. She was a pioneer in organizing recreation for Jacksonville's African-American community from 1918 until her retirement in 1950. In recognition of her dedicated service, the playground was renamed in her honor in 1983.
Further cementing its place in local history, Florida C. Dwight Memorial Playground was designated as a local historic landmark in 1995. This designation helps preserve the park's legacy and ensures its continued importance to the community.
