About Boyd Hill Nature Preserve in St Petersburg

Boyd Hill Nature Preserve is a 245-acre protected area located in St. Petersburg, Florida, on the shores of Lake Maggiore. The preserve showcases five distinct ecosystems native to Florida: hardwood hammocks, sand pine scrub, pine flatwoods, willow marsh, and lakeshore. These diverse habitats provide a home to a wide variety of flora and fauna, making it an excellent location for nature observation and environmental education.

The preserve features over three miles of trails and boardwalks that meander through the different ecosystems, allowing visitors to experience Florida's natural beauty up close. These trails are popular among hikers, bird watchers, and nature enthusiasts. As part of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission's Great Florida Birding Trail, Boyd Hill is particularly known for its bird-watching opportunities.

At the heart of the preserve is the Lake Maggiore Environmental Education Center, which offers interactive exhibits, educational programming, and a gift shop. The center serves as a hub for various nature programs, camps, and workshops designed for all ages. Additionally, the preserve includes the Pinellas Pioneer Settlement, a living history museum where visitors can experience the skills, crafts, and social customs of late 19th century life in west central Florida.

Boyd Hill Nature Preserve also features the Terry Tomalin Campground, St. Petersburg's first public primitive family campground. This 12-site campground provides an opportunity for visitors to immerse themselves in nature overnight. The preserve has recently undergone improvements to enhance visitors' experiences, including the addition of Hammock Hall, a multipurpose building that provides rental space and programming opportunities.

Throughout the preserve, visitors can observe metal sculptures created by the late Paul Eppling, a longtime resident of St. Petersburg, adding an artistic touch to the natural surroundings.
