About Spanish American War Memorial Park in Tampa
Spanish American War Memorial Park is located at the intersection of South West Shore Boulevard and Interbay Boulevard in Tampa, Florida. The park serves as a tribute to the American patriots who served during the Spanish-American War of 1898.
The centerpiece of the park is a historical marker erected in 1961 by the Florida Board of Parks and Historic Memorials. This marker commemorates Tampa's role as a port of embarkation for U.S. troops heading to Cuba during the war. From April to June 1898, approximately 30,000 troops arrived in Tampa, with 16,000 embarking from Port Tampa on June 7.
The park features a gazebo situated about 10 feet from the historical marker. Near the gazebo, visitors can find a historic plaque from the Port Tampa City Woman's Club, dedicating the park to the memory of Spanish American War veterans who encamped in the area in 1898.
Spanning approximately 1.0 acres, the park provides a serene green space for visitors to reflect on this period of American history. The park's location offers views of the surrounding area, including a plaza with a flagpole flying the American flag about 20 feet from the marker.
