Washington Square

Washington Square, located in Savannah, Georgia, is one of the city's 22 historic squares. Established in 1790, it sits in the northernmost row of Savannah's five rows of squares, positioned on Houston Street and East St. Julian Street. The square is named in honor of George Washington, the first President of the United States, who visited Savannah in 1791.

This square holds historical significance as it was once the site of the Trustees' Garden, an experimental agricultural project in the early colonial era. The garden served as a testing ground for various crops such as mulberry, hemp, and indigo, which were considered potential cash crops for the new colony. However, most of these agricultural experiments proved unsuccessful.

Washington Square is surrounded by some of Savannah's oldest houses, with the oldest building original to the square dating back to 1797. The square is primarily situated in a residential area, known for its New England-style architecture. Notable buildings near the square include the International Seamen's House, which has served visiting sailors since 1898, and what was once the Mulberry Inn, now transformed into The Brice, a Kimpton Hotel.

In the past, Washington Square was known for its New Year's Eve bonfires, a tradition that continued until the 1950s. Today, the square serves as a tranquil green space in the bustling historic district, offering residents and visitors a place for relaxation and enjoyment of Savannah's natural beauty.

The square underwent renovations in 1964, led by landscape architect Clermont Huger Lee and Mills B. Lane. These improvements included closing the fire lane, adding North Carolina bluestone pavers, installing water cisterns, and updating the walks, benches, lighting, and plantings.
