About McCarty Park in Aurora
McCarty Park, located in the East Side of Aurora, Illinois, is a historic 3-acre urban park that holds the distinction of being the first park established in the city. The park is bordered by E. Galena Boulevard to the south, E. New York Street to the north, and sits a short walk from downtown Aurora, making it easily accessible for visitors.
Originally part of the town layout designed by Samuel McCarty in 1835, McCarty Park has served as a central recreational space since its inception. Over the years, it has undergone significant renovations, including a $700,000 project that modernized its features while preserving its historical charm. Today, the park boasts a decorative wrought-iron fence, pergolas, and thoughtfully-designed landscaping that enhance its aesthetic appeal.
A key feature of the park is the interactive fountain and splash pad, which operate seasonally from Memorial Day to Labor Day, drawing families and children for a fun way to cool off during summer months. Newly designed entryways and drinking fountains—suitable for both humans and pets—were also added as part of the renovation. Additionally, McCarty Park’s central pergola adds a shaded area for relaxation amidst the greenery.
The park is open year-round, with hours that vary seasonally, offering a quiet retreat in the urban landscape of Aurora. Its historical significance, combined with its modern amenities, makes McCarty Park a notable and enduring fixture in the community.
