About River Esplanade in Chicago
River Esplanade Park is a small yet charming green space located in Chicago, Illinois. Spanning 1.12 acres, this park is situated in the Near North Community along the north bank of the Main Stem of the Chicago River. It offers a serene and inviting environment for visitors, with paved walkways, ornamental railings, and benches, making it an excellent destination for a quiet stroll or enjoying the scenic views of the river.
The park's most prominent feature is the Nicholas J. Melas Centennial Fountain, designed by Dirk Lohan and dedicated in 1989. During summer months, the fountain's water cannon creates an 80-foot arc of water over the river, providing an hourly spectacle. The area around the fountain is landscaped with seasonal plantings, enhancing the natural beauty of the space. Visitors can relax here to watch boats glide by or absorb the unique architectural backdrop of the city.
River Esplanade Park is also a key component of the larger Chicago Riverwalk system, though it offers a quieter and less crowded experience compared to the bustling Riverwalk on the south bank. The park provides a scenic walkway connecting to other nearby attractions and serves as a peaceful retreat in the heart of the city.
This park came into existence when the Chicago Dock and Canal Trust donated the property to the Chicago Park District in 1988 as part of the Cityfront Center redevelopment. It was designed to incorporate recreational space into a mixed-use urban area.
