About Connors Park in Chicago
Connors (William) Park is a compact, triangular-shaped green space located at 861 North Wabash Avenue in Chicago’s bustling Gold Coast neighborhood. Covering 0.34 acres, this park serves as a refreshing urban retreat amidst the surrounding high-rise buildings. Established in 1877, it is one of the city’s older parks and was transferred to the Chicago Park District in 1957.
The park is framed by Chestnut, Rush, and Wabash Streets and features a trellis structure surrounded by well-maintained landscaping. A central fountain adds to the aesthetic charm, while benches provide a restful spot for visitors to relax. Notably, the park’s mature trees, including a towering elm, offer shade in the summer and striking natural patterns in the winter. Although there is no playground, the open space around the fountain often attracts children.
Historically, the park has been known by various names, including Oak Park and Arbor Rest, before being renamed in 1970 in honor of William J. Connors, a seven-term Illinois state senator. A key feature of Connors Park is its accessibility and role as a gathering area for locals and Michigan Avenue shoppers. Additionally, the park houses concessions, such as Jeni’s Ice Creams, which enhance its appeal as a community space.
