Firemen's Memorial Park

Firemen's Memorial Park is located at 1072 W. Jefferson Avenue in Naperville, Illinois. The park serves as a tribute to Naperville's fallen firefighters and a place of remembrance for all firefighters who have served the community.

The centerpiece of the park is a memorial stone that honors the memory of four Naperville firefighters who lost their lives in the line of duty: Lieutenant Richard Rechenmacher, Engineer Jerry Herring, Firefighter Bernard Petrowski, and Lieutenant G.S. Winckler. Three of these firefighters died in a tragic accident on December 7, 1970, when their fire truck collided with a semi-trailer truck while responding to a call.

In 2020, to mark the 50th anniversary of the 1970 incident, a new sculpture called "Ladder of Light" was unveiled in the park. Created by sculptor Paul Kuhn, this artwork stands as a fitting tribute not only to the fallen firefighters but also to all firefighters who perform their duties with dedication and bravery.

The park is situated just west of the DuPage River and the entrance to the Riverwalk, making it easily accessible to visitors. Every year in late May, officials hold the Naperville Fallen Firefighter Remembrance Ceremony at the park, providing an opportunity for the community to honor and remember the sacrifices made by local firefighters.
