About Garden Plots Park in Naperville
Ron Ory Community Garden Plots is a unique green space located in Naperville, Illinois. Spanning an area of approximately 500 plots, this community garden provides a dedicated space for local residents to cultivate their own vegetables and flowers. The garden plots are situated along West Street, across from Knoch Park, offering convenient access for gardeners.
Named in honor of Ron Ory, a lifelong Naperville resident and dedicated gardener, the community garden plots serve as a testament to his passion for horticulture and years of service to the community. Ory, known as Naperville's "Master Gardener," played a significant role in promoting gardening education and sustainable practices in the area.
The garden plots are available for rent on a seasonal basis, typically running from May to October. Both full-size plots (29' x 18') and half-size plots (14.5' x 18') are offered to accommodate different gardening needs and preferences. The Naperville Park District, which manages the facility, also provides raised planting beds for individuals who may require special accommodations.
Beyond individual gardening spaces, the Ron Ory Community Garden Plots feature several educational and community-oriented elements. The site includes Idea Gardens, which serve as demonstrative spaces for gardening techniques and plant varieties. Additionally, the garden hosts a tree nursery and honey bee hives, further enhancing its role as an educational resource for the community.
Throughout the growing season, the garden plots become a hub of activity, fostering a sense of community among gardeners. Master gardeners are often available on-site to offer advice and assistance to both novice and experienced gardeners. The garden also plays a role in addressing food insecurity in the area, with many gardeners donating excess produce to local food pantries.
