Atwood Park

Atwood Park, located in Rockford, Illinois, is a scenic natural area covering 334 acres along the picturesque Kishwaukee River. This park is well-regarded for its rich biodiversity, which includes woodlands, marshes, and prairies, making it a haven for nature enthusiasts. As part of the Rockford Park District, Atwood Park not only offers beautiful landscapes but also contains historical remnants from its past as part of Camp Grant, an artillery range used during both World Wars. Visitors can explore remnants of trench bunkers and target pits, which provide a glimpse into the site's historical significance.

The park offers a variety of outdoor experiences. It features the Atwood Silent Sports Trail System, which includes approximately five miles of multi-use natural trails suited for beginner and intermediate hikers, mountain bikers, and cross-country skiers. The trails provide a serene setting to experience the park’s diverse ecosystems firsthand. The vibrant wildlife at Atwood Park is complemented by its award-winning Birds of Prey facility, showcasing live raptors and providing educational opportunities. Visitors can enjoy feeding demonstrations every Saturday at 1:00 PM and explore one of the few accessible treehouses in Illinois.

Another highlight is the Atwood Center, available to the public on Saturdays from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. The center serves as a hub for learning about the park's natural and historical features. It hosts events, field trips, and interactive programs that embrace the nostalgic spirit of outdoor camp activities, such as archery and low-rope courses. The park is free to enter and open year-round from 8:00 AM to 10:00 PM, welcoming visitors to enjoy self-guided hikes and other recreational activities.
