About Duncan Park in Springfield
Duncan Park, located in Springfield, Illinois, spans approximately 26 acres at the intersection of Mason Street and MacArthur Boulevard. Renamed in 2020 to honor Otis B. Duncan, a Springfield native and World War I hero who was the highest-ranking Black officer in the American Expeditionary Forces during the war, the park represents a significant historical and cultural landmark.
This urban green space offers a mix of recreational and natural amenities. The park features a modern playground system with engaging elements such as a zip line, teeter-totter, musical instruments, and other attractions designed to create an enjoyable experience for children. For fitness enthusiasts, Duncan Park includes a public fitness court and several well-maintained walking trails. The park also hosts a sledding hill in its northern section, which adds seasonal variety for outdoor activities.
Duncan Park is home to Springfield’s first disc golf course, established in 2000. This 18-hole course, known for its challenging terrain and scenic views, is suitable for both novices and experienced players. Additionally, there are six outdoor pickleball courts available for use from dawn to dusk, making the park a hub for sports enthusiasts.
Picnic shelters are another notable highlight of the park. The park also boasts a bandshell in its center, providing a picturesque venue for events and activities.
Parking is amply accommodated with three lots located on different sides of the park, and a pedestrian path connects key facilities within the park. Restroom facilities, renovated in 2019, ensure a comfortable experience for visitors. The integration of sports fields and open spaces further enhances the park's versatility for recreational use.
Duncan Park is more than a recreational area; it is a reflection of Springfield's history and community values. The renaming of the park was part of a larger effort to honor underrepresented figures in the city’s history and acknowledges the contributions of Otis B. Duncan.
