About Beverly D. Crone Restoration Area in South Bend

The Beverly D. Crone Restoration Area is a unique 111-acre park located at the intersection of Jackson Road and Linden Road, just west of U.S. 31 in St. Joseph County, Indiana. This site, formerly a landfill, has been transformed into a natural area and passive recreation site, jointly managed by the Department of Public Works and St. Joseph County Parks.

The park has gained recognition as a destination on the Indiana Birding Trail, attracting bird enthusiasts particularly in late spring and summer. It serves as a nesting site for several species of endangered birds, making it a valuable location for wildlife conservation.

One of the park's main features is a gravel walking and bike path, allowing visitors to explore the area while enjoying the natural surroundings. The restoration efforts have successfully converted the former landfill into a thriving ecosystem, showcasing the potential for reclaiming and repurposing land for environmental benefits.

As part of its ongoing development, a master plan for 2019-2023 has been created for the Beverly D. Crone Restoration Area.
