About Centennial Park in Davenport

Centennial Park is a 250-acre public park located along the Mississippi River in downtown Davenport, Iowa. It is one of four parks situated on the riverfront in the city, alongside LeClaire Park, Veterans Memorial Park, and River Heritage Park. The park's development began in 2000, and its name is derived from the Rock Island Centennial Bridge, which stands on the eastern edge of the park.

The site where Centennial Park now resides was formerly a landfill used by the city of Davenport until 1975. The northern part of the property was once a rail yard, while the southern portion served as festival grounds in the late 20th century. The park's construction was part of a $100 million project called River Vision, approved by the city council in 2004.

Centennial Park offers visitors a variety of recreational opportunities and amenities. The park features extensive riverfront access, allowing for activities such as fishing and boat launching. For sports enthusiasts, the park includes basketball courts and rugby fields. Families can enjoy the playground and sprayground, which is particularly popular during the summer months. The park also boasts a skateboard park, opened in 2006, which spans 33,000 square feet and was designed by SITE Design Group Inc. of Tempe, Arizona.

The Riverfront Parkway passes through Centennial Park, providing opportunities for walking, jogging, and cycling along the Mississippi River. The park's location offers scenic views of the river and the Rock Island Centennial Bridge, making it a popular spot for both recreation and relaxation.

Centennial Park plays a significant role in Davenport's efforts to revitalize its riverfront and provide green spaces for community use. Its transformation from a former landfill and industrial area into a vibrant public park demonstrates the city's commitment to environmental restoration and public recreation.
