Raccoon River Park

Raccoon River Park is a 631.61-acre urban park located in West Des Moines, Iowa. Considered the "crown jewel" of the West Des Moines parks system, it offers a diverse range of recreational opportunities and natural areas for visitors to enjoy. The park is centered around Blue Heron Lake, a 232-acre body of water that serves as a focal point for many activities.

The park's history dates back to the mid-20th century when the area was used for mining operations. In the 1990s, the City of West Des Moines, in collaboration with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, began developing the former mining site into a public park. This transformation has turned what was once an industrial area into a thriving recreational space.

Raccoon River Park features a variety of landscapes, including woodlands, prairies, and wetlands, providing habitats for numerous wildlife species. The park is particularly known for its bird population, with over 180 confirmed species, making it a popular destination for birdwatchers.

One of the park's main attractions is the 500-foot-long swimming beach on Blue Heron Lake, which is open from Memorial Day through Labor Day. The lake also offers opportunities for fishing, with species such as crappie, bluegill, bass, and walleye present in its waters. Boating is permitted on the lake, though it is designated as a no-wake zone to preserve the tranquil atmosphere.

For land-based activities, the park boasts a 3.2-mile loop trail that encircles Blue Heron Lake. This trail is partially paved and partially crushed rock, suitable for walking, jogging, and biking. The park also includes sports facilities such as soccer fields and a softball complex.

The Raccoon River Park Nature Lodge serves as an educational center, offering interactive exhibits and programs about the park's natural history and wildlife. Additionally, the park features a boathouse where visitors can rent watercraft such as canoes, kayaks, and paddleboards.

Accessibility is a priority at Raccoon River Park, with features such as an accessible fishing pier and beach wheelchairs available for use. The park also includes a large off-leash dog park, providing a space for pet owners to recreate with their canine companions.
