About Union Park in Des Moines
Union Park is one of Des Moines' oldest and most historic parks, established in 1894. This 51-acre park offers a variety of recreational activities and attractions for visitors of all ages.
The park's centerpiece is the iconic Rocket Slide, a towering playground structure that has been a favorite of local children for generations. Although currently closed for repairs until Spring 2024, the Rocket Slide remains a beloved symbol of the park's long history.
Another popular attraction is the Heritage Carousel, a beautifully restored carousel featuring hand-carved wooden animals. Operating from May through September, the carousel offers affordable rides for both children and adults, with tickets priced at just 50 cents for kids and $1 for adults.
Union Park also features two separate playgrounds catering to different age groups: one for children aged 2-5 and another for ages 5-12. The playgrounds include various equipment such as swings, slides, and climbing structures.
For those seeking relief from summer heat, the park offers a wading pool with fountains. Open from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend, the pool provides a refreshing spot for families to cool off and play.
The park's landscape includes large shade trees, open grassy areas, and formal gardens, creating a pleasant environment for picnics, relaxation, and outdoor activities. Tennis courts are available for sports enthusiasts, while multiple picnic areas with tables and grills accommodate group gatherings.
Union Park's rich history and diverse amenities make it a cherished destination for Des Moines residents and visitors alike, offering a blend of nostalgia and modern recreational facilities.
