Central Riverside Park

Central Riverside Park in Wichita, Kansas, spans over 50 acres along the Little Arkansas River and forms the heart of Wichita's historic park system, having parcels acquired between 1886 and 1917. The park is a blend of history, nature, and recreation, featuring lush greenery, mature shade trees, and open spaces for relaxation. Convenient sidewalks and a 0.5-mile oval walking path provide access to all areas and echo the original horse racetrack, known as Davidson’s Park. Along the walking path, visitors can explore 12 historical markers that detail the park's history.

One of the unique features of Central Riverside Park is the Kansas Wildlife Exhibit, which showcases over 25 native species in naturalistic enclosures. Originally serving as the city zoo, the exhibit now focuses on educating visitors about Kansas wildlife. For families and children, the park offers playgrounds with equipment suitable for all ages, including toddler-friendly sections. While the historic rocket slide remains as a nostalgic landmark, it is no longer functional for safety reasons.

Historical art and monuments enrich the park experience. Notable pieces include *The Hiker* bronze statue by Allen George Newman, commemorating Spanish-American War soldiers, and the Spanish-American Memorial Cannon, captured in Cuba during the war. The Solar Calendar sculpture by Steve Murillo adds a scientific touch, functioning as a precise astronomical observatory.

Central Riverside Park also caters to recreational needs, featuring picnic tables, gazebos, and a splash pad for summer fun. The Celebration Plaza Splash Pad and shaded gazebos provide ideal settings for gatherings. Accessibility is a priority, with parking areas and restrooms located conveniently throughout the park.
