About Triangle Park in Lexington
Triangle Park is a 1.3-acre urban green space located in the heart of downtown Lexington, Kentucky. Originally built in 1981, the park was designed by renowned landscape architect Robert L. Zion, who is known for creating some of New York City's most cherished public spaces.
The park features a tranquil setting with soft waterfalls, wide stone promenades lined with Honey Locust trees, and expanses of green grass. The waterfalls serve as a focal point, masking urban noise and creating a peaceful atmosphere in the bustling downtown area. The park's design incorporates ample seating, with tables and chairs scattered throughout for visitors to relax and enjoy the surroundings.
Triangle Park serves as a central gathering place for the Lexington community, hosting various events and activities throughout the year. During the warmer months, it's a popular spot for outdoor lunches, chess games, and simply enjoying the sunshine. In winter, the park transforms into a seasonal attraction with the installation of an ice skating rink, drawing thousands of visitors annually.
The park's location adjacent to major downtown landmarks such as Rupp Arena, the Lexington Opera House, and several hotels makes it a key component of Lexington's urban landscape. It provides a green respite for both locals and visitors, contributing to the city's efforts to create vibrant, accessible public spaces.
In 2011-2012, Triangle Park underwent significant renovations to enhance its features and infrastructure, including improvements to support the seasonal ice rink. These updates have helped maintain the park's role as a central feature of downtown Lexington life.
