About Woldenberg Riverfront Park in New Orleans
Woldenberg Park is a 16-acre green space located along the Mississippi River in New Orleans, Louisiana. Stretching from Canal Street to Jackson Square, this riverfront park offers visitors scenic views of the river and the French Quarter. The park was developed on the site of former industrial warehouses and shipping docks, opening to the public in 1984 in anticipation of the Louisiana World Exposition.
The park features a red brick promenade that curves along the riverbank, providing sweeping vistas of Algiers Point across the river and the Crescent City Connection bridge. Visitors can enjoy walking, jogging, or cycling along this path while taking in the sights of river traffic, including barges, freighters, and cruise ships.
Woldenberg Park is home to several notable sculptures and artworks. These include a bronze statue of Malcolm Woldenberg, for whom the park is named, a stainless steel sculpture called "Ocean Song" symbolizing water movement, the "Monument to the Immigrant," a piece titled "Old Man River," and a Holocaust Memorial. In 2015, a 90-foot linear spray fountain was installed near the Audubon Aquarium of the Americas, providing a refreshing spot for visitors on hot days.
The park serves as a venue for various events and festivals throughout the year, including the French Quarter Festival and New Year's Eve and Fourth of July celebrations. It's also a popular spot for picnics, relaxation, and enjoying the outdoors in the heart of New Orleans.
Woldenberg Park is connected to other notable areas of the city, including the Moon Walk promenade and Washington Artillery Park. The Riverfront Streetcar runs along the river levee, offering convenient transportation for visitors exploring the area.
