Audubon Riverview Park

The Fly, officially known as Riverview Park, is a popular recreational area located at the far end of Audubon Park in New Orleans, Louisiana. Situated behind the Audubon Zoo, this greenspace stretches along the Mississippi River, offering visitors a unique vantage point to observe the river and its traffic.

The area gets its colloquial name "The Fly" from a butterfly-shaped river viewing shelter that was built in the 1960s but was subsequently demolished in the 1980s after sustaining severe damage from river traffic. Despite the shelter's absence, the name has persisted among locals.

The Fly features approximately 800 feet of open grassy space perimetering the Mississippi River, making it an ideal location for various recreational activities. Visitors often use this area for relaxing, having picnic lunches, organizing crawfish boils, barbecues, tossing frisbees, or simply watching the sunset over the river.

The park is not just a passive recreation area; it also includes several athletic fields catering to different sports. These fields are designed for activities such as soccer, rugby, lacrosse, and flag football. Additionally, The Fly houses five baseball diamonds, including the Whitney Bank Miracle League Field, which is built on a rubberized surface specifically designed for children with special needs to play.

The Fly is open to the public from 5:00 AM to 9:00 PM daily. It's worth noting that for large gatherings or events involving any form of structure (such as chairs, tables, tents, or inflatables), or for groups of more than 25 people, a park permit is required.
