About C. Bickham Dickson Park in Shreveport
C. Bickham Dickson Park is a 585-acre natural area located in southeast Shreveport, Louisiana, situated along Old River Lake. Known as the largest SPAR-managed park in the region, it offers a combination of developed and natural spaces that create an inviting environment for outdoor activities. The park is particularly notable for its equestrian trails, which attract horseback riders, and its fishing dock, providing an excellent resource for anglers. Small boats are welcomed on the park's 200-acre lake, although the use of gasoline motors is prohibited, ensuring a serene and eco-friendly experience for visitors.
The park provides opportunities for birdwatching, as it features diverse habitats, including bottomland hardwood forests and shrub-scrub woodlands, which make it a hotspot for birding enthusiasts. Additionally, the park houses the Red River Education and Research Park (RRERP), a collaborative initiative with Louisiana State University Shreveport (LSUS). This facility emphasizes the management and study of natural resources within the Red River Basin and supports ongoing research on flora, fauna, and water quality.
Over time, flooding has posed significant challenges to the park, resulting in closures and damage to facilities, including roadways and fishing piers. As of recent updates, C. Bickham Dickson Park remains closed due to high water levels. Despite these challenges, the park has historical and environmental significance, and restoration efforts continue to be a focus.
