About Madison Square in Baltimore
Madison Square Park is a historic public green space located in Baltimore, Maryland. The park has a rich history dating back to the 19th century when it was part of the original Madison Square, which included the area where Harry Mills Terrace once stood and the adjacent football fields.
The park's landscape was once described by Thomas Scharf in his 1881 publication "History of Baltimore City and County" as gently sloping to the south, with a central fountain and basin containing swimming fish. The square featured rustic seats beneath large willow trees, winding walks paved with concrete and bordered by shade trees, and beds of colorful flowers.
In the mid-20th century, the park underwent changes. A portion was converted into playing fields, while another section became the site of Harry Mills Terrace, a public housing development. However, by the mid-1990s, the housing was demolished due to poor conditions, leaving a vacant lot.
There have been proposals to restore Madison Square Park to its historic design, with the aim of stimulating the local real estate market and providing the community with a well-maintained historic park. The restoration plans have included recreating the criss-crossing paths of the original square and incorporating a fountain or focal point at the top of the park.
Today, Madison Square Park serves as a valuable open space in East Baltimore, offering residents a place for recreation and community gathering.
