About Statler Park in Boston
Statler Park is a small, historic park located at the intersection of Columbus Avenue and Stuart Street in Boston, Massachusetts. This pocket park, covering an area of just 0.23 acres, is situated near the Boston Park Plaza Hotel. It was originally donated to the city in 1927 by Ellsworth M. Statler, the founder of the adjacent Statler Hotel (now the Boston Park Plaza), as part of his vision for creating an attractive urban environment. In 1930, the park was further enhanced by the addition of the Statler Fountain, a centerpiece designed by Ulysses Anthony Ricci, which features a bronze statue of a woman and Art Deco elements.
The park is notable for its tranquil atmosphere, making it a peaceful retreat from the busy commercial district surrounding it. It serves as a resting spot for pedestrians and visitors, with lush greenery, carefully maintained landscaping, and a series of benches to relax on. The park underwent significant renovations in 2010, which were recognized with the Preservation Achievement Award. The redesign preserved the historical essence of the park while improving its layout and usability.
Statler Park also holds historical significance as the land it occupies was once part of Boston Harbor Bay’s shoreline. The area was filled in during the 19th century to form what is now the Back Bay neighborhood. The park stands as a reminder of Boston's evolving urban landscape and provides a green oasis in the heart of the city.
