Norman B. Leventhal Park, located in Post Office Square in the heart of Boston's Financial District, is a 1.7-acre urban oasis uniquely positioned amidst the towering skyscrapers of the city’s bustling downtown area. Once home to an unsightly above-ground parking garage, the site was transformed in 1991 into an award-winning public space that balances modern design with lush greenery. The park was developed atop a seven-level underground parking structure—a pioneering example of a public-private partnership—and has since served as a model for contemporary urban parks.

The park features meticulously maintained landscaping, including over 125 different plant species, complemented by artistic and architectural elements. One of its central attractions is the walk-through sculptural fountain, "Immanent Circumstance," designed by Howard Ben Tré. This fountain creates a water dome effect when in operation, adding a dynamic and soothing visual focal point. The park also includes a 143-foot-long garden trellis on its eastern side, designed with granite columns and an open dome that frames the pedestrian promenade. This trellis is elegantly lit with a computer-controlled lighting scheme that changes colors seasonally or for event celebrations.

The Great Lawn, slightly raised above surrounding pathways by a granite curb, serves as a popular spot for relaxation, with free seat cushions provided for visitor comfort. The park offers a mix of seating options, from benches and granite walls to café-style tables, allowing guests to enjoy the ambiance in both sunny and shaded areas. Surrounded by carefully concealed garage ramps hidden by greenery, the design integrates seamlessly with the cityscape, offering a tranquil retreat from the financial district’s fast-paced environment.

Norman B. Leventhal Park is more than just a visual gem; it is also heavily programmed with activities. Throughout warmer months, it hosts free midday musical performances, outdoor fitness classes, and other community events. A unique feature of the park is the "Library on the Lawn," which provides books and magazines for visitors who want to read while enjoying the outdoors.
