About Goldfish Pond Park in Lynn

Goldfish Pond Park is a historic urban green space located in Lynn, Massachusetts. The park centers around a heart-shaped pond that has been a focal point of the community since the early 19th century. Originally a swampy lowland area used by farmers for fertilizer, the site was transformed into a formal park by the city in 1870.

The pond itself has an interesting history, dating back to around 1840 when local boys introduced goldfish into the swampy waters. The fish thrived, giving the pond its distinctive name. In 1870, the city undertook a significant project to reshape the area, creating a curbed walkway around the pond and forming an island in its center.

Goldfish Pond Park has long been a popular gathering spot for Lynn residents. In its early days, it hosted concerts, fireworks displays, and served as a venue for swimming and ice skating. Today, the park continues to be a cherished community space, maintained by the dedicated Goldfish Pond Association, which was formed in 1980 to restore and preserve the area.

The park features an island accessible by a small boat, which volunteers use to conduct maintenance work. Throughout the year, the park hosts various community events, including an annual spring planting day and a fall flea market fundraiser.

Goldfish Pond Park not only provides recreational opportunities but also serves as a living piece of Lynn's history. It's closely associated with the city's early European settlement, as Edmund Ingalls, Lynn's first settler, built his home near the current pond site in 1629.
