About Ashley Park in New Bedford
Ashley Park, located in New Bedford’s South End neighborhood, is a cherished community space offering both active and passive recreation opportunities. Recently renovated with a $1.7 million investment, the park has undergone significant transformations to better serve its diverse and historic neighborhood. It spans approximately 5.5 acres and is managed by the City’s Department of Parks, Recreation, and Beaches.
The park now features improved pathways, a prominent new entrance at Rivet and Orchard Streets, and enhanced lighting and landscaping throughout. These upgrades, complemented by new benches and green spaces, encourage community engagement and provide a welcoming environment for visitors. The northeast corner of the park formerly housed a softball field, which has been replaced with open space for flexible community use.
Key highlights include basketball courts and a playground located near Swift Street, as well as a splash pad for children. A brick plaza with shaded seating and flower beds enhances the park’s charm at the Bolton and Rivet Street intersection. The Ashley Park Community Center is another key feature, hosting activities like games for seniors and youth programming. The center is a vital hub for community events, strengthening connections among residents.
Despite its recreational appeal, the park's location in a mainly residential area has posed challenges related to perceptions of safety due to crime in surrounding areas. Greater focus on accessible paths and clearly marked entrances has been part of the park’s redevelopment efforts to mitigate these concerns and promote usability.
Ashley Park is a vibrant neighborhood asset and plays a crucial role in the social and recreational life of New Bedford’s South End. With its modern amenities and strategic improvements, the park continues to enhance the quality of life for local residents.
