About West Park in Ann Arbor
West Park is a 27-acre public park located just west of downtown Ann Arbor, Michigan. Its boundaries are defined by W. Huron Street, Chapin Street, Miller Avenue, and N. Seventh Street. Initially established in 1908, the park has grown over time through multiple land acquisitions, eventually becoming a vital part of the city’s green spaces.
The park integrates natural beauty with historical and recreational features. It includes wetlands, bioswales, a pond, and restored open waterways—features designed for stormwater management and natural water filtration. Wildlife such as birds, muskrats, turtles, frogs, and butterflies thrive here, creating a vibrant ecological habitat. Two “Champion Trees,” a burr oak and a red oak—remarkably the largest of their species in the city—are highlights of the park’s natural landscape.
West Park is equally notable for its community and recreational offerings. It houses a historic open-air concert Band Shell, originally constructed in 1938 and listed on Ann Arbor’s Register of Historic Places in 1995. Although currently closed for renovations, the Band Shell remains a focal point for local events and concerts. Surrounding this area is a plaza featuring sculptures by local artists, providing a space for seating and community gatherings.
For sports enthusiasts, the park includes basketball and tennis courts, open playfields, and a baseball/softball field. A children’s playground with slides, swings, and a merry-go-round accommodates younger visitors, while paved walking trails and boardwalks offer serene pathways for exercise and exploration. Additionally, the park features picnic tables, community gardens, and parking accommodations, making it accessible and enjoyable for visitors of all ages.
Over the years, West Park has served as a hub for cultural, recreational, and community activities. Its proximity to Ann Arbor’s downtown further enhances its appeal, blending natural beauty with urban convenience.
