About Staebler Farm County Park in Ann Arbor
Staebler Farm County Park is a unique agricultural-themed park situated in Superior Township, Michigan, near Ann Arbor. Spanning 98 acres, the park offers a glimpse into the region's rural and agricultural history while providing modern recreational opportunities. It features open spaces south of Plymouth Road for public access and passive recreational activities like walking and wildlife viewing. The north side of the road, which includes historic buildings and farm infrastructure, remains under development and restricted from public access.
The park integrates natural landscapes, such as meadows, woodlots, and wetlands, with historical and working farm elements. Two ponds, Peaceful Pond and Heidt Pond, add to the serene environment and are used for fishing. Visitors can explore mowed, natural-surface trails that wind through hayfields and interact with the Michigan Folk School, located on-site, which offers classes in traditional skills like blacksmithing, woodworking, and fiber arts. Historical structures, such as barns, a well house, and silos, contribute to the educational and cultural value of the park.
Supported by the Washtenaw County Parks and Recreation Commission, Staebler Farm County Park reflects a vision to preserve and celebrate the area's agricultural heritage. Future plans include restoring farm structures, building additional trails, planting more trees, introducing small grazing animals, and constructing a picnic pavilion. Programming and community engagement at the park aim to foster sustainable living practices and an appreciation for farming traditions.
