About Foster Park in Grand Rapids

Foster Park is a small triangular park located in the Heritage Hill neighborhood of Grand Rapids, Michigan. Situated on Cherry Street SE, this compact green space serves as a quiet oasis in the historic district.

The centerpiece of Foster Park is a statue known as "The Hiker," which commemorates Michigan veterans of the Spanish-American War (1898-1902). Sculpted by Theo Alice Ruffles Kitson, this statue was originally dedicated in 1928 and stood in the city's Lookout Park before being relocated to Foster Park in 1957. The statue rests atop a boulder that was dredged from the Grand River, adding a local touch to the memorial.

While small in size, Foster Park offers a few amenities for visitors to enjoy. The park provides a place for quiet contemplation or a brief respite from urban surroundings. Its location in the Heritage Hill neighborhood, known for its concentration of historic 19th and early 20th-century homes, makes it a fitting spot to appreciate the area's rich architectural heritage.
