About Durant Park in Lansing

Durant Park is a historic green space located in downtown Lansing, Michigan, prominently situated just north of Lansing Community College between Capitol and Washington Avenues. Spanning three acres, the park was established around 1920 by William C. Durant, an influential industrialist and founder of General Motors. Originally part of a city block purchased by Durant in 1919, the land was transformed into a public park by Kalamazoo landscape designer Charles Maxson. Durant donated the park to the City of Lansing in 1921, and it was formally dedicated with a community parade on June 23 of that year.

The park features a blend of historic charm and urban convenience. A central circular fountain basin is one of its notable features, complemented by flowerbeds, mature trees, and serpentine concrete pathways. On the northern side of the park lies a children’s playground, offering a safe space for families and kids. Benches are scattered throughout the area, providing restful spots for visitors to enjoy the landscaped setting or take a break from their urban routines. Durant Park’s flat, paved trails make it ideal for walking and dog walking, offering an accessible layout for all visitors. Its designation as a Michigan Historic Site underscores its cultural and historical significance.

Overall, Durant Park serves as a small but meaningful oasis in the city, blending history, leisure, and a sense of community in its design and preservation.
