About Lefleur's Bluff State Park in Jackson

LeFleur's Bluff State Park is a 305-acre urban oasis located in the heart of Jackson, Mississippi. The park is situated along the Pearl River and offers a blend of natural beauty and recreational opportunities just minutes from downtown.

The park is named after Louis LeFleur, a French-Canadian explorer who established a trading post on the site in the late 1700s. Today, it serves as a refuge from the bustle of the city, with lush woodlands, scenic trails, and a 50-acre lake called Mayes Lake.

Visitors to LeFleur's Bluff can enjoy hiking through nature trails that wind through the forest and along the Pearl River. The park's trail system includes short loops suitable for families as well as longer routes for more experienced hikers. Wildlife viewing opportunities abound, with the chance to spot deer, birds, turtles and other native species.

Mayes Lake is a focal point of the park, offering fishing for bass, bream, catfish and crappie. A boat launch is available for small watercraft, though only electric trolling motors are permitted on the lake. The shoreline provides scenic spots for picnicking or simply relaxing by the water.

For overnight guests, the park features both RV and tent camping areas. The campground includes 28 developed sites with electrical and water hookups, as well as primitive camping areas. Amenities like bathhouses with hot showers are available for campers.

LeFleur's Bluff is also home to two major attractions - the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science and the Mississippi Children's Museum. These institutions offer educational exhibits and programs that complement the park's natural setting. A state-of-the-art playground located between the museums provides additional recreational options for families.

The park's location within Jackson city limits makes it a convenient escape for urban residents and visitors alike. Its diverse offerings - from quiet nature trails to modern museums - allow LeFleur's Bluff to serve as both a natural preserve and a hub for outdoor recreation and learning in Mississippi's capital city.
